Schmidt earns All-Conference for Border West golf team

Senior Nelson Schmidt earned All-Conference honors for the Border West boys’ golf team in 2019. Schmidt was tied for 12th overall in the individual Quad County individual standings for the season, and the top 15 golfers earned All-Conference.

Border West ended its season at the Section 5A Boys and Girls Golf semifinals Wednesday, May 29, at Eagle Creek Golf Club in Willmar. Schmidt was the only Border West golfer to earn a berth in the finals, but since he is also a member of the Border West baseball team, he did not golf in the finals due to a Section 6A Baseball Tournament game the same day.

Noah Chase, of Ottertail Central, finished first in the final league standings, while John Vall, of Hillcrest, and Jackson Nyhus, of OTC, were tied for second.

Last year, Mike Vall, of Hillcrest, who was sixth this year, finished first, while Nyhus was second, John Vall was third, and Chase was fourth.

Schmidt was 12th overall, while just missing out on All-Conference honors was Braeden Lanter, who was 19th overall. Cole Gilsdorf was 26th, while Mason Zimmel was 29th, Matt Thielen was 33rd, and Charlie Kleindl was 41st.

Schmidt also earned All-Conference last year for the Border West boys’ golf team, placing 10th after placing 19th as a sophomore.

Section 5A results -- Schmidt shot a first-day 96 and the cutoff to qualify for the second day was 98. Just missing qualifying to the “finals” for the Buccaneers were Cole Gilsdorf, who was 31st overall with a 101, while Braeden Lanter shot a 111 and was 52nd, and Charlie Kleindl carded a 132 and was 64th overall of the 70 golfers.

Lac qui Parle won the boys’ team title with a two-day total of 658. In second was Lakeview (364-367--731), while Minneota was third (386-384--770), and YME was fourth (379-402--781).

Also earning state berths were Aaron Loe of Lakeview (76-80--156), Sam Ohliger of YME (80-86--166), Nolan Boerboom of Minneota (88-81--169), Jake Wagner of Canby (93-88--181), and Cole Myhre of Minneota (95-87--182).
