Knights swept by Hawley in baseball double header at home Thursday
Tyler Anderson
The Knights hosted the Hawley Nuggets on Thursday night for a conference double header. Hawley exploded for seven runs in the eighth inning of game one to get the 14-7 extra-inning win and then topped the Knights, 3-0, in four innings due to darkness.
The Knights (1-4, 0-3 HOL) have games this week at home against DGF (conference double header) on Tuesday night and then travel to Pelican Rapids on Friday night.
Knights – 7
Nuggets – 14
The Knights fell behind early in game one, giving up two runs in the first, one in the second and three in the fourth to fall behind 6-0. But they bounced back for four runs in the bottom of the fourth to draw to within two. Hawley scored once more in the fifth, but the Knights came screaming back with a single run in the sixth and a pair of big runs in the bottom of the seventh to tie the game at seven apiece.
Unfortunately, the Nuggets’ offense opened up for seven runs in the top of the eighth while the Knights were held scoreless in the bottom of the inning and Hawley got the win.
Tyler Anderson pitched seven-and-a-third innings and gave up nine runs on 11 hits. He struck out eight and walked three batters. Bryce Olson pitch two-thirds of an inning and gave up five runs on five hits and walked a batter.
“Tyler Anderson pitched a good game,” said coach Terry Ohlgren. “Alan Strom and Tyler both hit the ball well.”
The Knights got their seven runs on nine hits. They committed two errors in the game. Hawley scored their fourteen runs on 16 hits. They had one error in the game.
Strom was three for five at the plate and scored a run; Anderson was two for four, knocked in a run and scored twice; and Blake Schmidt was one for two and scored a run.
“We kept our heads up and battled our way back to tie the game in the seventh,” said Ohlgren. “We just need to close out these close games and get into the win column. Not everything went our way, but that’s the nature of the game and we all need to learn from that and get better.”
Knights – 0
Nuggets – 3
The Knights and Nuggets got just four innings of game two in as daylight faded. Hawley got the win in the game as they led, 3-0, when the game was called.
Hawley got three runs on three hits in the game, while the Knights got just one hit from Eric Erickson in their four innings of work on offense.
Erickson pitched for the Knights and gave up those three runs (only one earned) on three hits. He walked four and struck out five.
“Errors, walks, and the sun going down all worked against us in this game,” noted coach Ohlgren.
