Duane Haugen
Duane Haugen, age 74, of Elbow Lake, passed away at the ELEAH Medical Center in Elbow Lake on Friday, April 25, 2008, after returning from his winter home in Arizona.
Funeral services for Duane Haugen were held Tuesday, April 29, at Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake with Pastor Weston Moir officiating.
Duane Arthur Haugen was born in Norcross, Minnesota on September 29, 1933, to Emil and Gladys (Bobblet) Haugen. He graduated from Herman High School in 1952. Duane served in the army as a medic from 1953 to 1955 during the Korean War.
On March 21, 1959, Duane was united in marriage to Betty A. Tweed.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and just being with family and friends.
Duane is survived by his wife of 49 years, Betty, of Elbow Lake; children Cindy (Terry) Hansen, Robert (Tammy), Kevin (Sean), and Kim (Mike) Erickson; eleven grandchildren, Sheila, Linda, Vanessa, Ashley, Anthony, Spencer, Alicia, Cortney, Nicholas, Matthew, and Sarah, all whom he enjoyed very much.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
He has gone home and will be dearly missed.
Terrance (Harmon) Norris
Terrance (Harmon) Norris, age 59, of Hoffman, passed away at the ELEAH Medical Center in Elbow Lake on Friday, April 25, 2008.
Funeral services for Terrance (Harmon) Norris were held Wednesday, April 30, 2008, at Lakeview Assembly of God Church in Elbow Lake with Pastor Mike Seaver officiating.
Terrance (Terrie) Louise Harmon was born on August 20, 1948, at Burtrum, Minnesota, to Milo and Kathryn (Knapp) Harmon. She was baptized and confirmed in the Catholic faith in Hopkins, Minnesota, and graduated in 1966 from Guardian Angel Catholic High School in Chaska, Minnesota. Terrie lived in Hopkins and Burnsville before moving to Hoffman in 1986.
She was married to Clifford Hilde for 17 years before they divorced. For the past 23 years, Terrie has lived with her partner, Jerry Norris, in rural Hoffman.
Terrie loved to do crafts, reading, fishing, and going to auctions and flea markets, and was also “Norris Salvage” bowling team captain for ten years. She was an avid Green Bay Packers football team fan; she enjoyed her coffee and conversation with family and friends.
Terrie is survived by her partner, Jerry Norris of Hoffman; daughter, Cindy Hilde of Elbow Lake; sons, Gallen Norris of Hoffman, and Richard Hilde of Elbow Lake; sisters, Pat Harmon of Albuquerque, New Mexico, Mary (Danny) Light of Buffalo, Minnesota, Carol (Al) Warren of Litchfield, Judy Smith of Jordan, and Peg (Barry) Ams of Tucson, AZ; brothers, Tim (Pat) Harmon of Swanville, and Joe (Diane) of Hopkins.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one niece.
Benjamin Moerke
Mr. Benjamin Moerke, age 91, of Elbow Lake, died Friday, May 2, 2008, at his home.
Funeral services for Ben Moerke were held on Monday afternoon at United Lutheran Church in Elbow Lake with Pastor Bob Toso officiating. Burial was in the Union Cemetery, Elbow Lake.
Music for the service was provided by Jessica Poyzer, organist. The Aul family sang, “You Raise Me Up” and “I Can Only Imagine.” Congregational hymns were, “This is My Father’s World” and “Beautiful Savior.”
Ben’s grandchildren served as casketbearers.
Ben was born February 28, 1917, in Pomme de Terre Township to Dutch immigrants John and Anna (Oldenburger) Moerke. He grew up on several farms in Grant and Nobles Counties. Ben, his parents and his brothers and sisters moved to a farm on Ten Mile Lake in 1936.
When his parents died in 1939 and 1940, Ben took over the farm and raised several of his siblings.
On August 12, 1944, Ben married Mildred Feelhaver. They raised their five children on the farm. Ben and Mildred spent many Saturday nights enjoying community dances in their younger years. They moved to a farm in Pelican Lake Township in 1968. In 1973 his son Robert took over the farm, and Ben and Mildred moved to Elbow Lake. Ben worked for Range Hatchery, hauled sugar beets and continued to help on the farm well into his 70s.
In 1983 Ben had open heart surgery. After that he became an avid walker, and many remember him walking along the highways near Elbow Lake. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and deer hunting well into his later years. He enjoyed spending time with his family, especially birthdays, holidays and other get-togethers.
Ben is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mildred; children, Robert (Joan) Moerke of Ashby, Kenneth (Rebecca) Moerke of Elbow Lake, Judy (Loren) Hams of Hoffman, Roger (Fran) Moerke of Grand Junction, Colorado, Joan Moerke (Val Merz) of Fergus Falls; grandchildren, Shannon (Lynda) Moerke, Yvonne (David) DeVito, Teresa Magnuson, Charlotte (Jeff) Nordrum, Jerimiah Moerke, Naomi Moerke, Preston Moerke, Heather Pederson, Eric Moerke, Elizabeth (Ryan) Schremmer, and Joseph Moerke; great-grandchildren, Samantha (Karl) Lindquist, Margaret (Adam) Fagre, Morgan and Dylan Moerke; Bobby, Jessie, Sammy, Cassie, and Natalie DeVito; Reid Magnuson; Thomas and Anna Nordrum; and Olivia Schremmer; one great-great-grandchild, Trenton Lindquist; siblings, Wubena (Lawrence) Larson, George Moerke, Anna Mae Harstad, and Louise Gislason; many nieces and nephews; and special cousin, Ruth Moerke.
Ben was preceded in death by his parents; siblings, John, Fred, Gertie, Frank, and Bill; and special cousins, George W. and Fred W. Moerke.
Kyle Marple
Kyle Marple, age 37, passed away on Wednesday, April 28, 2008, at Innovis Hospital in Fargo, ND.
Funeral services were held on Saturday, May 3, at St. Olaf Catholic Church in Elbow Lake with Father Andrew Marthaler and Deacon Joe Wood officiating. Burial was at St. Loretto’s Catholic Cemetery, Elbow Lake.
Kyle Matthew Marple was born June 5, 1970, in Fergus Falls, Minnesota, to Russ and Gloria (Koziol) Marple. He was baptized and confirmed at St. Olaf’s Catholic Church in Elbow Lake. He attended Elbow Lake-Wendell School and graduated in 1988. He furthered his education by attending Alexandria Tech School for Fluid Power Technology, graduating in 1990. Kyle also attended one year at Moorhead State University for Manufacturing Engineering.
Kyle had many occupations which allowed him to travel throughout the United States. In the fall of 1991, Kyle moved to Los Angeles, California, where he worked for Paul Monroe Engineering and traveled to Quito, Equador, and worked in the oil fields. His other occupations took him to Houston, Texas, where he worked on oil rigs, truck driving, custom combining, and insurance sales. Kyle recently worked as a dispatcher for the Red River Regional Dispatch Center in Fargo, North Dakota. He worked there for 14 months and was recently accepted into the Fargo Police Academy.
Kyle’s true passion was sky diving with his friends, but he also enjoyed music, motorcycling, playing pool, poker and softball.
Kyle is survived by his parents, Russell and Gloria Marple of Wendell; brothers, Russell M. (Melea) Marple of Breckenridge, and Curtis Marple of Buffalo; sisters, Julie (Jim) Dehn of Moorhead, Jean Marple of Chaska, and June (Rich) Pland of Sacramento, California; nieces, Jennifer Marple, Brooke Pland, Alexis Pland, Jillian Pland; nephew, Garrett Marple; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Peter and Loretta Koziol and Max and Hazel Marple; and aunt and uncle, Gleo and Alvena (Koziol) Swenson.
Maurice “Lyle” Greeley
Maurice “Lyle” Greeley, age 81, formerly of Elbow Lake, passed away April 9, 2007, at his home in Sunrise Cottages in Rochester, Minnesota.
A memorial service was held at Monday, May 5, 2008, at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake. His son-in-law, Pastor Jeffery King, will officiate.
His niece, Elaine Burgess, will provide music. Burial will follow at Union Cemetery, Elbow Lake.
Maurice Lyle Greeley was born July 12, 1925, in Watkins, Minnesota. He grew up in Elbow Lake and graduated from Elbow Lake High School in June 1943. During World War II, he joined the Navy and served his tour of duty in the Pacific Theater as a gunner’s mate with the amphibious forces.
On May 19, 1946, Lyle married Lena Weigand in Wendell, Minnesota; they were later divorced.
He lived in Elbow Lake during the 1950s and 1960s and operated an accounting and business service. Lyle was active in the Lutheran church and Masonic Lodge and was a member of the city council for several years. He moved to Rochester and was engaged in the accounting and real estate business. In retirement, Lyle was active in the Senior Citizen Center.
Survivors include two daughters, Teresa McKay of Pal Desert, California, and Susan Greeley of Oak Park, Illinois; two grandsons and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ruby Houghton Greeley and Maurice William Greeley; and three sisters, Vivian, Dauna, and Glorene.
Orville Roswold
Orville Roswold, age 94, long-time resident of rural Evansville, died February 25, 2008, at the Broen Memorial Home in Fergus Falls.
Services for Orville Roswold will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 12, at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake with Pastor David Gran officiating.
Arrangements are with the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake.
Marcus David Ehlers
Marcus David Ehlers, infant son of Bethany Kay Ehlers, died Thursday, May 1, 2008, at the Winnie Palmer Hospital in Orlando, nestled in his mother’s arms.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday, May 8. Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday at Hilltop Celebration Church, Fergus Falls with Pastor Dan Mueller officiating. Interment will be at Ness Cemetery, Elbow Lake.
Marcus is survived by his mother, Bethany; grandparents, Mark and Diane Ehlers; his great grandparents, Charles and Beverly Godel and Arnold and Doris Ehlers all of Elbow Lake; aunts and uncles, Gina Ehlers of Fergus Falls, Larissa and Jeremy Driscoll of West Fargo; Rebekah and Ross Mapel of Grand Forks, David Ehlers of Elbow Lake; and his cousins, Madison, Dillon, Hayden, Lauren, Maxwell, Noah and Landon.

Robert O. Germundson
Robert O. Germundson, age 88, of Elbow Lake, died Saturday, May 3, 2008, at the ELEAH Medical Center in Elbow Lake.
Funeral services for Robert O. Germundson will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, at United Lutheran Church, Elbow Lake, with Pastor Bob Toso officiating. Burial will be in the Ness Cemetery, Elbow Lake.
Friends may call at the Erickson-Smith Funeral Home in Elbow Lake on Friday from 5-7 p.m. and at the church one hour before services on Saturday.
